An interview with Panagiotis Demestichas

Panagiotis Demestichas

In this issue of “Our Highlights”, we are honored to feature an interview with Panagiotis Demestichas, Co-Founder, Chairman of the BoD at WINGS!

Q: Could you tell us about WINGS’ mission?

A: WINGS has already been operating for 12 years. From the very beginning, our goal has been to develop applications for critical economic sectors by leveraging our vast technological expertise.

Our technology competences include: (1) The Internet of Things (IoT): we develop and integrate devices to connect the physical and digital worlds. (2) Advanced networks: in most of our applications we use 5G, even though we can use any network. We are also planning versions with 5G SA and beyond. (3) Artificial Intelligence (AI): building on our foundation in optimization techniques, we have been developing expertise in machine learning for over 20 years. (4) Visualization: starting with dashboards and mobile apps, we have also reached the level of XR.

Based on these technologies we have developed applications for: (1) Environment protection, especially against fires; We have an advanced solution that issues early warnings on fire threats within a second. (2) Management of water and energy networks (3) Management of transportation infrastructures (4) Agriculture, which also includes Aquaculture (5) Industry and Logistics (6) Health and Wellness (7) Culture and Education.

Q: What would you say your role in p-NET is?

A: p-ΝΕΤ is a very important joint venture for WINGS. It offers a powerful testbed to try out innovations and the impact of technology, and, most importantly, it offers the facilities to conduct demonstrations and business development. Due to the importance of p-ΝΕΤ, WINGS supports p-NET’s efforts to attract funding for instance through joint proposals / projects. Such examples are cybersecurity and 5G, Sand5G, and AMAZING-6G, managed by WINGS, through which there will be trials on various application sectors, powered by advanced versions of 5G, towards 6G.

Q: What specific technologies could you introduce in the agricultural sector in Western Greece and the Peloponnese and how about the region’s aquaculture industry?

A: WINGS is dedicated to enhancing sustainability and efficiency through smart technologies. In Western Greece and the Peloponnese, agriculture is one of the vital sectors. We’ve implemented digital solutions that empower farmers to monitor the soil health, optimize irrigation, and forecast crop yields with greater accuracy. Our goal is to blend tradition with innovation to ensure food security and economic growth. Aquaculture is a cornerstone of the Greek and local economy. We’ve introduced IoT-based systems that monitor water quality, oxygen levels, and fish health in real time. These solutions reduce waste, improve yields, and align with sustainable practices. The insights provided help producers adapt quickly to environmental changes, ensuring consistent and high-quality output. These solutions are being commercialized internationally, so we are looking forward to an exciting year ahead.

Q: How can WINGS address water management challenges in the region?

A: I will mention two examples. We address infrastructure management, for example, we have digital twins for dams and pumping stations. Moreover, irrigation efficiency is crucial, given the Mediterranean climate. Our smart irrigation systems use AI and sensor technology to analyze weather patterns, soil moisture, and production needs. This ensures water is distributed precisely where and when it’s needed, reducing waste and conserving resources. Customers report significant reductions in water usage and improvements in their performance.

Q: How are cultural and digital transformation linked in your projects?

A: Culture and technology go hand in hand. In Western Greece and the Peloponnese, we’ve implemented virtual reality (VR) applications for museums that bring history and heritage to life. These immersive experiences allow visitors to explore ancient sites, artifacts, and stories in ways that were previously impossible. By integrating these cultural applications with our broader digital solutions, we’re not only preserving traditions but also making them accessible and engaging for a global audience.

Q: What has been the impact of these initiatives so far?

A: The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Farmers and aquaculture businesses are experiencing increased efficiency and reduced costs. Moreover, our cultural initiatives are helping to attract younger generations to these industries by making them more technologically appealing. We’re proud to see these solutions fostering both economic and environmental resilience in the region.

Q: What’s next for WINGS in terms of innovation and expansion?

A: Our focus remains on scalability and adaptability. In 2024 we managed to have international sales in Europe and also smaller scale commercial engagements in the Middle East, North Africa and South America. We plan to further refine our solutions, based on user feedback and expand to other regions with similar needs. Sustainability will remain our main principle, ensuring that our work benefits both local communities and the planet.
